Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Golf Handicaps

New to golf? Understanding the World Handicap System is easier than you think. In this guide, youโ€™ll learn what a golf handicap is, how to calculate your Course Handicap, what Stroke Index means, and how your shots are allocated on the course.

Golf Handicap Terms

Handicap Index (HI)

Your official handicap that reflects your overall playing ability.

Course Handicap (CH)

The number of shots you receive on a specific course and set of tees.

Stroke Index (SI)

A ranking of each hole from 1 (hardest) to 18 (easiest).

Slope Rating (SR)

A measure of a courseโ€™s difficulty ranging from 55 (easiest) to 155 (hardest)

Course Rating (CR)

The average score a scratch golfer is expected to shoot on the course.

What is a Handicap Index?

A golf handicap, known as a Handicap Index, is a numerical measure of your golfing ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other by adjusting their scores.

Your Handicap Index is your official handicap, calculated from your best 8 of your recent 20 scores. This number is then used to work out your Course Handicap when you play on a specific course and tee.

Why Do You Need a Golf Handicap?

  • Fair competition with golfers of all skill levels
  • Track your improvement over time
  • Access to official competitions
  • Enjoy social games with handicap-based scoring

How to Calculate Your Course Handicap

Think of your Handicap Index as your official handicap that follows you everywhere, while your Course Handicap adjusts to reflect the difficulty of each specific course and tee.

Every golf course has three key ratings: Slope Rating, Course Rating, and Par.

  • The Slope Rating is a measure of the course difficulty for average golfers. The higher the slope rating, the more difficult the course is.
  • The Course Rating is the average score a scratch golfer (a golfer with a handicap index of 0) is expected to shoot.
  • The Par is the standard number of shots a scratch golfer is expected to take for the course.

Itโ€™s easy to confuse Course Rating and Par. Think of Par as the target score for a scratch golfer, while the Course Rating reflects what scratch golfers actually tend to score. For instance, a course might have a Par of 72 but a Course Rating of 74.2. This shows that even scratch golfers often score above Par due to course difficulty.

Your Course Handicap is calculated using your Handicap Index, Slope Rating, Course Rating, and Par

Course Handicap = Handicap Index x (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating - Par)

Donโ€™t worry โ€” you donโ€™t need to calculate this manually.

What is Stroke Index in Golf?

After a course is rated, each hole is assigned a Stroke Index, ranking holes from 1 to 18 based on difficulty

The harder the hole, the lower the stroke index. The easier the hole, the higher the stroke index.

  • Hole with Stroke Index 1 = Hardest
  • Hole with Stroke Index 18 = Easiest

Your Course Handicap and the Stroke Index work together to determine which holes you get extra shots on, starting with the most difficult holes first.

  • If your Course Handicap is 9, you would receive 1 extra shot on holes with Stroke Index 1-9.
  • If your Course Handicap is 18, you would receive 1 extra shot on all holes.
  • For Course Handicaps above 18, additional shots are given starting on the hardest holes.
