Where this fits in

Once you know your Course Handicap for a course, the next question is where those shots actually land on the card. That is what Stroke Index decides.

Every hole has a Stroke Index from 1 (hardest) to 18 (easiest). Shots are allocated starting with the hardest holes first.

How shots are spread across the card

  • Course Handicap 9: 1 shot on SI 1 through SI 9
  • Course Handicap 18: 1 shot on every hole
  • Course Handicap above 18: a second shot on SI 1, then SI 2, and so on

In competition, use your Playing Handicap (after any format allowance) rather than your full Course Handicap. See golf competition formats for allowances by format.
